Summary

Bruno is an eight-year-old German boy who leads a very comfortable life in Berlin during the Second World War. His father is a high ranking Nazi officer, and things change when the family has to move due to his father’s new post. In his innocence, Bruno sees the nearby concentration camp as a ‘farm’ and wonders why its inhabitants are always wearing striped pyjamas. Eventually Bruno becomes friends with a Jewish boy his own age who lives on the other side of the fence.

Outlander is a 2009 science fiction film directed by Howard McCain and starring James Caviezel. Caviezel has described Outlander to be a light combination of Braveheart and Highlander.

Plot

Outlander begins when a space craft crashes onto planet earth. The ship lands in Norway in the time of the Vikings, 709 A.D. From the wreckage emerges a soldier from another world – Kainan – who hunts a bloodthirsty creature known as the Moorwen. Man and monster both seek revenge for violence committed against them. As the Moorwen ravages the Viking world, killing everything in its path, Kainan forms an alliance with the primitive but fierce warriors. Whilst trying to hunt for the Moorwen, war brews among the Vikings, which ends with both sides taking immense losses. As the enemy Vikings retreat into the forests, the Moorwen strikes, leaving the vikings no choice but to run for help to their once close enemies. Together, the two sides attempt to destroy the Moorwen as a single band of Vikings. The village takes massive casualties, including the Viking Leader. The village in fear and its warriors demoralised, most of the vikings leave the village in search of a new home and safety. Kainan and the remaining warriors stand together to destroy the Moorwen. Kainan combines his advanced technology with ancient Iron Age weapons, and goes on to the final battle with the Moorwen. The final battle takes place when Kainan and the Moorwen fight on a cliff. The monster is about to fall, but it hangs onto Kainan’s arm. Kainan then slices the monster’s hand, sending the monster falling to its death. Kainan then chooses to stay with the humans and becomes king of the vikings.

Munich is a 2005 historical fiction film about the Israeli government’s secret retaliation after the 1972 Munich massacre of Israeli Olympic athletes by Black September gunmen. The film stars Eric Bana and was co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg. It was written by Tony Kushner and Eric Roth.

The film shows how a squad of assassins, led by former Mossad agent Avner (Eric Bana), track down and kill a list of Black September members thought to be responsible for the eleven Israeli athletes’ murders. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The first part of the film, which depicts the hostage taking, corresponds well with historical accounts. The second part of the movie, which depicts the Israeli government’s response, has been debated a great deal by film critics and newspaper columnists. Spielberg refers to the film’s second part as “historical fiction”, saying it is inspired by the actual Israeli operations which are now known as Operation Wrath of God.

Children of Men is a 2006 dystopian science fiction film co-written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. The Strike Entertainment production was loosely adapted from P. D. James’s 1992 novel of the same name by Cuarón and Timothy J. Sexton with help from David Arata, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. Set in the United Kingdom of 2027, the film explores a grim world in which two decades of global human infertility have left humanity with less than a century to survive. Societal collapse, terrorism, and environmental destruction accompany the impending extinction. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom—perhaps the last functioning government—persecutes a seemingly endless wave of illegal immigrant refugees seeking sanctuary. In the midst of this chaos, Theo Faron (Clive Owen) must find safe transit for Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey), a pregnant Fijian refugee.^[3]

The film was released on 22 September 2006, in the UK, 19 October 2006, in Australia and on 25 December 2006, in the U.S., critics noting the relationship between the Christmas opening and the film’s themes of hope, redemption, and faith. Described as a companion piece to Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también (2001), both films examine contemporary social and political issues through the epic journey of the road film.

“Children of Men” was not a financial success, but attracted positive reviews from critics and acclaim from film goers.
